18th century, from абазы (abazy, Abazins) + suffix -ин (-in), denoting nationality. From Abaza абаза (ābāzā, Abazins, Abkhaz).

Cognate with the Abkhaz endonym аҧсуа (āpsuā), Adyghe абадзә (ābāʒә, Abazins), Turkish abaza (Abkhaz), also perhaps Ancient Greek Ἀψῑλαι (Apsīlai, Apsilae) and Old East Slavic обезы (obezy).
