From *bogun (“joint, articulation; generation”), derived from Proto-Turkic *bog- (“to tie up, to strangle”).
Cognate with Karakhanid [script needed] (boɣun, “knuckle”), Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (boğun, “joint, knot”); Kazakh буын (bwın, “joint; generation”), Kyrgyz муун (muun, “joint; generation”), Uzbek boʻgʻin (“joint; generation”).
Compare also Turkish boğum (“knuckle, node, knot”), Karakhanid [script needed] (boɣïm, “the knuckles of the fingers”) derived from the same root.
