Inherited from Old East Slavic вѣник (věnik), from Proto-Slavic *vĕnik, from *vĕnъ (“wreath”) + *-ikъ, details of further origin unclear (possibly from Proto-Indo-European *woh₁y-nos or derived later) but ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁y- (“to twist, wind, weave”).
Cognate to вен (ven), венец (venec), венок (venok), вейка (vejka), вить (vitʹ).
