Etymology
From Proto-Slavic *vitędzь, borrowed from Germanic *wiking- (compare Old Norse víkingr). Cognate with Slovene vitez, dialectal Bulgarian витез (vitez), Russian витязь (vitjazʹ, “hero”), Slovak víťaz (“winner”).
