Etymology
From Proto-Slavic *mirъ (“peace; world”), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *mejHrós (cognates include Old Lithuanian mieras (“peace”) and Latvian miêrs (“peace”)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *mey- (“to tie”); see also Ancient Greek μίτος (mítos, “warp thread”), Old Persian 𐎷𐎰𐎼 (mi-θ-r), and Sanskrit मित्र (mitra).[1]
