From рас- (ras-) + торопи́ть (toropítʹ, to hurry) + -ный (-nyj). Cognate with Ukrainian розторо́пний (roztorópnyj), Polish roztropny (clever) and more distantly Lithuanian tar̃pti (to succeed, to prosper) (1sg. tarpstù), tarpà (prosperity).
