Etymology

From Old East Slavic тверезъ (tverezŭ), probably a metathesised form of терезвъ (terezvŭ), from Proto-Slavic *terzvъ. Cognate with standard Ukrainian твере́зий (tverézyj, sober) or Belarusian цвяро́зы (cvjarózy, sober).

Doublet of тре́звый (trézvyj), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic.
