From *turmuš (“life”) – apparently a Central Asian innovation, from Proto-Turkic *dur- (“to stand; to live”).
Cognate with Tatar тормыш (tormış, “life”), Kazakh тұрмыс (turmıs, “life”), Kyrgyz турмуш (turmuş, “life”), Uzbek turmush (“life”), Uyghur تۇرمۇش (turmush, “life”), Turkmen durmuş (“life”), etc.
