From Proto-Mongolic *taxulai (“hare”) from earlier *tapulai. Akin to Khitan 匋裏 (taul, “rabbit”) and Proto-Turkic *tabɨĺgan (“hare”), compare Old Turkic 𐱃𐰉𐰽𐰍𐰣 (tabïšɣan, “hare”), Turkish tavşan (“rabbit”).
