From Proto-Slavic *tъščeta, a derivative of Proto-Slavic *tъščь (whence то́щий (tóščij)) + *-ota (whence -ота (-ota)).
Further back, from Proto-Indo-European *tweskʷ- (“desert, barren”). Compare Sanskrit तुच्छ (tuccha, “empty, vain”), Latin tesqua (“desert”).
