Etymology
By metathesis from Proto-Iranian *udra-, from Proto-Indo-European *udrós (“aquatic, of water”), from *wed- (“water, wet”). For other examples of such a metathesis see ӕрды́н (ærdýn) and ӕрду́ (ærdú).
