From Classical Mongolian, equivalent to шалтах (šaltah, “to pretend”) + -(г)аан (-(g)aan) with the -г- (-g-) of the suffix perhaps influenced by шалтаг (šaltag, “motive”).
Compare Ordos [ʃiltʰaɣ̱aːn], Buryat шалтагаа (šaltagaa), but Kalmyk шалтан (şaltan).
