From Proto-Turkic *yok-karɨ (“upper; upward”), from *yok (“up, upward; upper; upland”). *-karɨ is an aditive (directional) affix.
Cognate with Kazakh жоғары (joğarı), Kyrgyz жогору (cogoru), Uzbek yuqori, Azerbaijani yuxarı, Turkish yukarı (“high. upper”); Khakas чоғар (çoğar, “West; upper”), Yakut соҕуруу (soğuruu, “South”), etc.
