From *qaydan "from where", from Proto-Turkic *ka- (“interrogative particle”). -dan is an ablative case formant.
Cognate with Tatar кайдан (qaydan), Kazakh қайдан (qaydan), Kyrgyz кайдан (kaydan), Shor қайдаң, Khakas хайданъ (xaydanʺ, “from where”), etc.
