ҡарағас

Bashkir

Ҡарағас

Etymology

Probably from qara-yïğač (black tree) (see Proto-Turkic *kara (black) and *ïğač (tree)).

However, Rahmatullayev suggests for the Uzbek term a derivation from *qayïr ("tree bark"; purportedly "hard, firm, solid") and *ïğač (tree)).

Cognate with Kazakh қарағаш (qarağaş, Ulmus carріnіfolіa), Uzbek qayragʻoch (Ulmus carріnіfolіa), Uyghur قاراياغاچ (qarayaghach, pine tree; spruce tree; elm tree).
