A composite of Proto-Turkic *Kuĺ (“bird”) and Proto-Turkic *Kūrt (“worm”). See resp. ҡош (qoš) and ҡорт (qort) for further etymology.
Cognate with Kyrgyz кушкурт (kuşkurt, “the animal world, wild animals”).
