Etymology
From Sogdian 𐫀𐫇𐫋𐫀𐫐 (ʾwjʾk /užāk/, “letter of the alphabet”) via Turkic, perhaps originally from Middle Chinese 字 (dzɨH, “letter”). Occasionally confused with үзэг (üzeg, “pen”) as in several other Mongolic languages.
