From *Դրասխան (*Drasxan) + -ակերտ (-akert), the first part of which is a given name probably borne by the city's founder, from Middle Iranian *dars-xᵛan, from Iranian *dr̥s-hvan- (with a sun-like look), composed of *dr̥s- (look) (see Proto-Indo-European *derḱ-) + *hvan- (sun) (see Avestan 𐬓𐬀𐬥 (xᵛan)).
