From Middle Iranian; compare Parthian *(h)amvast- (“believer, faithful”), from Old Iranian *ham-vasta-, from the root *vat- (“to be possessed by a supernatural force, to be inspired; to perceive, to know”); see հաւատ (hawat) for more.
