The earlier form is հոգվոց (hogvocʿ), originally in the phrase հոգվոց հանել (hogvocʿ hanel), from Old Armenian յոգւոց հանել (yogwocʿ hanel, to sigh), where յոգւոց (yogwocʿ) is յ- (y-) + ոգւոց (ogwocʿ), the plural ablative case of ոգի (ogi, soul; breath).
