Etymology
From Arabic دَوَالِي (dawālī), plural construct state of دَالِيَة (dāliya, “vine; varix”) or from its Classical Syriac cognate ܕܠܝ (dālī, “vine; varicose vein”). Compare also Old Armenian դոյլ (doyl, “pail, bucket”), which ultimately may be from the same Semitic root.
Has also been compared to Udi тӏул (ṭul, “grape”), Urartian [script needed] (uldi), [script needed] (uduli, “vineyard”), Akkadian 𒄑𒆜𒆳 (/tillatu/, “vine”).
