Perhaps related to אֵפֶר‎ ('éfer, ʾḗp̄er, “ash”). Compare Aramaic עַפְרָא‎ (ʿap̄rā, “dust”) (absolutive: עֲפָר‎ (ʿăp̄ār)), Arabic غَبَرَة‎ (ḡabara)/غُبَار‎ (ḡubār, “dust”) and (perhaps borrowed from Aramaic) عَفَر‎ (ʿafar, “dust”).
