שעפּס

Yiddish

Etymology

From Middle High German schopz, schöpz (castrated male sheep), from a West Slavic language, from Proto-Slavic *skopьсь (eunuch, someone castrated). The restriction to sheep may be due to the phonetic similarity to Middle High German schāf (sheep), but compare Czech skopec (castrated ram). Compare regional German Schöps (castrated male sheep; mutton), Russian скопе́ц (skopéc, eunuch).

Noun

שעפּס (sheps) m, plural שעפּסן (shepsn)
