أورشليم
See also: اورشلیم
Arabic
Etymology
From Classical Syriac ܐܘܪܫܠܡ (ʾūrišlēm), a pre-Hebrew form. Compare 𒌑𒊒𒊓𒅆 (/urusalim/) in the Armana letters (14th century B.C.).
Usage notes
Because of its common origin with Hebrew ירושלים, the Arabic أُورُشَلِيم (ʾūrušalīm) is used in official Arabic documents of the Israeli government. It is also used in Christian liturgical Arabic. Outside of these two contexts, the name is seldom used and الْقُدْس (al-quds) is preferred.
