Borrowed from Aramaic אָוָוזָא (/ʾawazzā/), from Akkadian 𒊻𒄷 (/ūsu/, “duck”), from Sumerian 𒊻𒄷 (/uz/, “wild duck, waterfowl”), likely all onomatopoeic in origin; cognates with Hebrew אֲוָז (ʾăwāz) and Classical Syriac ܘܰܙܳܐ (wazzā).
