Etymology

From the root ح م ل (ḥ-m-l); compare حَمَلَ (ḥamala, to carry).

Verb

اِسْتَحْمَلَ (istaḥmala) X, non-past يَسْتَحْمِلُ‎ (yastaḥmilu)

  1. to ask or demand carrying; to charge with one's affairs
  2. to become able to carry loads
    • 7th century CE, Sunan Abī Dāwud, 16:43:
      فِي كُلِّ سَائِمَةٍ فَرَعٌ تَغْذُوهُ مَاشِيَتُكَ حَتَّى إِذَا ٱسْتَحْمَلَ
      fī kulli sāʾimatin faraʿun taḡḏūhu māšiyatuka ḥattā ʾiḏā staḥmala
      On every pasturing animal there is a firstling that your cattle feeds until it becomes capable of carrying a load.
