Akin to Manichaean Parthian wʾdrwng (wādrūng, “lemon balm, balm mint”). Compare Old Armenian վարունգ (varung), Mongolian батраш (batraš), Kalmyk батраш (batraş), Iranian borrowings. Perhaps ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wódr̥ (“water”).
