Etymology
From Middle Persian wʾlʾn' (wārān) (Manichaean Middle Persian wʾrʾn (wārān)), compound of wʾl (wār-) and -ʾn' (-ān), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *waHr- (“water; rain”), from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁r- (“water”).
Indo-Iranian cognates include Northern Kurdish baran, Central Kurdish باران (baran), Avestan 𐬬𐬁𐬭𐬀 (vāra, “rain”), Ossetian уарын (waryn, “rain”), Sanskrit वार् (vār, “water”).
