From بگم (bagam, “queen”), from بگ (beyg, “titled man, chief”), from Ottoman Turkish بك (beg), from Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (beg, “ruler”) from Old Turkic 𐰋𐰏 (beg, “chief, titled man”). Akin to Karakhanid باكْ (bēg, “chief, a woman's husband”), Old Uyghur [script needed] (beg, “lord, chief”).
