Etymology

Synchronically analyzable as derived from the active participle of تَجَرَ (tajara, to trade, to conduct commerce) from the root ت ج ر (t-j-r), but presumably from Classical Syriac ܬܓܪܐ (taggārā) or a dialectal form of it with different vocalization, whereby the verb is denominative.
