خزف
Arabic
Etymology
Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܚܶܙܦܳܐ (ḵezəpā), ܚܶܨܦܳܐ (ḵeṣəpā, “piece of pottery”), related to ܚܰܙܽܘܦܳܐ (ḵazūpa, “rough”), which is a phono-semantic matching of Hittite 𒂁 (ḫarši-, “pottery vessel”). The Aramaic root is related to حَصَفَ (ḥaṣafa, “to twist a rope strongly”).
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /xa.zaf/
