Etymology
From the Proto-Semitic *šidθ- (“six”), cognates with Hebrew שישה \ שִׁשָּׁה (shishá), Classical Syriac ܫܬ݁ܳܐ (štāʾ), Ge'ez ስድስቱ (sədəstu), Ugaritic 𐎘𐎘𐎚 (ṯṯt), and Akkadian 𒐋 (šeššet). Ultimately from a Proto-Afro-Asiatic root; compare to Egyptian sjsw, Central Atlas Tamazight ⵙⴹⵉⵚ (sḍiṣ), and Hausa shidà.

Usage notes
The indefinite triptote form سِتَّة (sitta) is used in compound numbers. The indefinite diptote form سِتَّةُ (sittatu) is used when the number stands alone:
