From Arabic شَيْطَان (šayṭān), possibly from the verb شَيَّطَ (šayyaṭa, “to scorch”). Compare Classical Syriac ܣܛܢܐ (sāṭānā), Hebrew שָׂטָן (śāṭān), Ge'ez ሠይጣን (śäyṭan), Ge'ez ሰይጣን (säyṭan).
