From Middle Persian fryh/pryh/pryy (frih, fri, “dear”), from Proto-Iranian (compare Avestan 𐬟𐬭𐬌𐬌𐬀 (frya, “dear, beloved, affectionate; a friend, a well-wisher”)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian (compare Sanskrit प्रिय (priya)), from Proto-Indo-European *priH- (“dear”).
