From Proto-Indo-European *selǵ- (to stand). Akin to Middle High German selken (dribble (clouds)). Other Indo-Iranian cognates include Kurdish هێشتن (hēštin, permit), Pashto ايښودل (iśodəl, to place) and Sanskrit सृजति (sṛjati, discharge, emit). Also related to Old Armenian արձակ (arjak, free, loose), ապահարզան (apaharzan, divorce) անդ which are Iranian borrowings.
