From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ćʰoṭṭa-. Compare Nepali छोटो (choṭo, “small”), Gujarati છોટું (choṭũ), Urdu چھوٹا (“small”), Oriya ଛୋଟ (choṭô, “small, lesser”), Assamese ছোট (süto, “junior, low grade”).
Earlier lexicographers suggested Sanskrit क्षुद्रक (kṣudraka, “small, insignificant”).
