From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (gwklt'), 𐫃𐫇𐫃𐫏𐫡𐫅 (gwgyrd /gōgird/, sulphur). Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬋𐬵𐬎𐬐𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬙𐬌 (vōhukərəti).
