From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hátti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hátˢti, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁édti (compare Latin edō (“I eat”), Ancient Greek ἔδω (édō, “I eat”), Hittite 𒂊𒀉𒈪 (e-id-mi /ēdmi/, “I eat”), Old Church Slavonic ꙗсти (jasti), Old English etan (whence English eat). The root is derived from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Had- (compare Avestan 𐬀𐬛 (ad-)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ed-.
