From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hanyás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hanyás.[1] Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬥𐬌𐬌𐬀 (aniia), Old Persian 𐎠𐎴𐎹 (a-n-y /aniya/).
