Etymology
Borrowed from Persian آواز (âvâz), from Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾwʾz /āwāz/, “voice, sound, tune”), from 𐭥𐭠𐭰 (wāč, wāz, “word, speech”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wṓkʷs. Compare Gujarati અવાજ (avāj), Hindi आवाज़ (āvāz), Sindhi آوازُ (āvāzu), Bengali আওয়াজ (aoyaj), Assamese আৱাজ (awaz).
