From Proto-Indo-Aryan *(H)íṣuṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *(H)íšuš, from Proto-Indo-European *(H)ísus (“arrow”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἰός (iós, “arrow”) and Avestan 𐬌𐬱𐬎 (išu, “arrow”).
