From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Húćyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Húčyati, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁úk-ye-ti, from *h₁ewk- (“to be accustomed”). Cognate with Lithuanian jùnkti (“to learn”), Old Church Slavonic оучити (učiti), Gothic 𐌱𐌹𐌿𐌷𐍄𐍃 (biūhts, “accustomed to”), Old Armenian ուսանիմ (usanim, “to learn”).
