From Old Marathi उस (usa), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀉𑀘𑁆𑀙𑀼 (ucchu), from Sanskrit इक्षु (ikṣu). Cognate to Hindi ईख (īkh), ऊख (ūkh), Nepali उखु (ukhu), Bengali আখ (akh).
