Etymology
From Persian عورت ('owrat, “woman; genitals; nudity”), from Arabic عَوْرَة (ʿawra, “genitals; nudity; woman”). The shift to “woman” is due to the doctrine of some Islamic schools that the whole female body is a form of “nudity” that must be covered in public.
