From Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀓𑀸𑀭𑁂𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀬 (kārellaya), related to, if not from, Sanskrit कारवेल्ल (kāravella, “bitter melon”). Compare Punjabi ਕਰੇਲਾ (karelā), Gujarati કારેલું (kārelũ), Bengali করলা (kôrôla), Marathi कारली (kārlī), Assamese কেৰেলা (kerela).
