From Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀔𑀸𑀡𑀺 (khāṇi), 𑀔𑀸𑀡𑀻 (khāṇī), from Sanskrit खानि (khāni, “mine”). Compare Punjabi ਖਾਣ (khāṇ), Gujarati ખાણ (khāṇ), ખાણી (khāṇī), Marathi खाण (khāṇ), and Bengali খাদ (khad).
