Sanskrit
Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *gʰr̥dʰás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰr̥dʰás, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰr̥dʰós, from *gʰerdʰ- (“to enclose”). The change from dʰ to h is irregular, and possibly due to later generalization, suggesting an earlier Rigvedic gṛdhá.
