From Proto-Indo-Aryan *źʰángʰaH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ĵʰángʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰengʰ- (“to walk, step”).[1] Compare Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬧𐬔𐬀 (zaṇga), Middle Persian [script needed] (zang).
