From Proto-Indo-Aryan *tanúHs, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tanúHs, from Proto-Indo-European tenúh₂s, from *tenuh₂- (body). Cognate with Old Persian 𐎫𐎵𐎢𐏁 (tanūš), Avestan 𐬙𐬀𐬥𐬏 (tanū). The reflexive use is an Indo-Iranian innovation.
