Etymology

From Persian تیز (tez), from Old Persian tezh. Cognate with Sanskrit तिज् (tij, to excite, stir up, instigate).

  1. sharp
    यह चाक़ू काम के लिए काफ़ी तेज़ है।
    yah cāqū kām ke lie kāfī tez hai.
    This knife is sharp enough for the job.
    उसकी आवाज़ बहुत तेज़ है।
    uskī āvāz bahut tez hai.
    His voice is very sharp/shrill.
  2. (depending on context) fast, brisk, clever, acrid, strong
    मेरी घड़ी तीन मिनट भी तेज़ है।
    merī ghaṛī tīn minaṭ bhī tez hai.
    My watch is three minutes too fast.
    मेरे लिए कुछ तेज़ चाय बनाओ।
    mere lie kuch tez cāy banāo.
    Make some strong tea for me.
    यह तेज़ लड़का के साथ काम करो।
    yah tez laṛkā ke sāth kām karo.
    Work with this clever boy.
